Belgrade Forest

The name of this vast forest originated from Serbian war prisoners for whom Suleyman the Magnificent built a village after his conquest of city of Belgrade in 1521. These people were responsible for the dams and streams of the forest. This was the part of the water supply system of the city of Istanbul and water which was transferred by the means of aqueducts and pipes ended at great water depo Taksim square. This was the village of rich Christians whose life is described by the Lady Mary Montagu, the wife of the British Ambassador. The Belgrad Forest houses great number of water dams, aqueducts which still draw the admiration of the visitors.
