This was the site of oval shaped Roman Forum, established by Emperor Contantine the Great who considered it as the center of his new city. The forum was encircled by the columned porticos, temples, Senate houses and churches. In the center of the Roman forum stood the column of Constantine with the statue of the emperor depicted like God Apollo. Emperor had a known with the nails used for the crucifixion of Christ. The chapel which was located underneath the column contained some holy relics such as pieces of the holly cross, the veil of veronica the hammer with which Moses built the Ark. Great porphyry drums were bound together by metal rings as a precaution against earthquakes.
