Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar was built at the command of Mehmet the Conqueror shortly after the conquest of Contantinople. Although at the beginning it consisted only two bedestens(ware houses) with the addition of shops, hans, caravanserails, gates, mosques, baths, this amazing labyrinth became a city in the city.

From the 15th century up to present day, the Grand Bazaar which was subject to the destruction of great fires and earthquakes was restored and rebuilt on several occasions.

According to a census made in the 19th century, Grand Bazaar contained 4,399 shops, 2,195 workshops, 18 fountains, several mosques and a primary school.
