Located close to city walls of ancient Contantinople, Chora church is splendid example of the last golden age of Byzantine Art. This small but very attractive church was first built in the 6th century. Renovated in the following centuries, Chora was magnificently re-decorated in the 14th century during the time of great statesman, Theodora Metochites who spent all his time and his money to embellish this church. After the conquest of Constantinople, Chora Church was converted into a mosque and served as a Muslim shrine during Ottoman centuries. Chora was restored to its former glory by the Institute of Byzantine studies whose members worked nearly 10 years to restore the magnificent mosaics of the church.
