Galata Tekkesi

Galata Mehlevihanesi, the first convent for Whirling Dervishes was established in 1491 by Iskender Pasa. After a great fire which demolished the Mehlevihane in 1765, it was rebuilt to its former glory. Galata Mehlevihanesi which was described often in 19th century was closed down during the Republic Period when Ataturk banned all the religious Orders. Restored in 1965, the building now houses musical instruments, objects, books used by the Whirling Dervishes. Books of Divan literature, particularly work of lyric poet and mystic Seyh Galip is kept there. In the cemetery of the convent, there are graves of the prominent members of the Mehlevi Order. Sema, the ritual dance of Whirling Dervishes is often performed in Galata Convent.
