DOLMABAHCE PALACE

This beautiful Ottoman Palace, magnificently situated at the European side of the Bosphorus strait, was built by Sultan Abdulmecit who decided to have a new fashionable residence similar to European palaces. The construction of the palace which covers an area of 250.000 square meters, took about 13 years and finished in 1855. Abdulmecit, the first occupant of the palace, lived there 15 years. Since some of the Sultans didin't show too much intrest to Dolmabahce palace, it stayed empty most of its time.

Besiktas

This old district of Istanbul fascinate visitors with outstanding museums and monuments: the tomb of Barbaros Hayrettin, the Navy Museum, the collection of Royal Barges, Sinan Mosque are some of its monuments to visit.

The tomb of Barbarossa

This monumental tomb, built by architect Sinan, contains the tomb of famous Ottoman admiral Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa, his son, his wife and tomb of Cafer Pasa, another reputed general. Nearby there is famous monument, sculptured by Zulhu Muridoglu, depicts the Barborassa and his sailors.

Naval Museum

Naval museum which was first established in Kasimpasa was transferred to Dolmabahce and then to present day buildings. The museum houses great collection of items related to the Naval History of Ottoman empire and young Turkish Republic. It displays the uniforms of Turkish sailors, the models of battleships, drawing, engravings, document and pictures related to Naval History of the empire. Most important item in the collection is a chart depicting the Atlantic coast of south America drawn in the 16th century by a famous Turkish navigator, Piri Reis. Also an amazing collection  Bosphorus are of rowing barges used by the Sultans when they moved at displayed in a separate part of the museum.
