Central government

Turkey is a parliamentary democracy like Canada, Garment, New Zealand. Prime minister is head of the state. President rules bur does not govern. The president has some executive powers and right to veto the legislation. The cabinet, headed by prime minister, handles government affairs. The president chooses the prime minister form the biggest party in the parliament. Parliament has 550 members. Elections are held every 6 years. President who is elected by the parliament does not need to be member of the parliament. He is elected for 7 years term and cannot be re elected. Local governments Turkey is divided provinces administered by governors who act as representatives of the central government in Ankara. Governors follow the activities such as health, education, and security. Each province is divided into smaller units administered by the government officials again appointed by the central government. Municipal organizations are elected every five years and are responsible for the road constructions, public transportation, water supply and sewage systems and city planning. Governor is regarded as the highest civic authority in the province.
