The Hippodrome which was the most vital place in ancient Contantinople was first built in the Roman centuries. While he was reconstructing his new Rome in the 4th century, Emperor Constantine the Great had it enlarged the seating capacity of the Hippodrome to 100.000 people. This was the place where chariot races, sportive activities and great ceremonies took place. The race would start with the sign of the emperor who came directly from his palace to Kathisma "Royal Box" where he dropped his handkerchief for the start of the chariot race. Then four chariots started t race and they had to circle 7 times around the racing ground.
