HISTORY OF TURKISH RUGS

PAZIRIK RUG

The oldest rug, woven with symmetrical knots (Turkish knotting) was discovered in Siberia by a Russian archaeologist in 1949. Due to the water which penetrated into the tomb, Pazırık rug was frozen and miraculously preserved. Dated to 5th century BC, it is considered as the oldest rug ever woven with symmetrical knots. This rug with very high density of knots and sophisticated patters such as animal and human figures proves that rug weaving is much older than 5th century BC.
