MUSEUMS

The Archaeological Museums   The Archaeological Museums houses is one of he fascinating collections in Istanbul. Great Palace Located in the vicinity of the Blue Mosque, The Mosaic Museum is fascinating place where the visitors would enjoy the floor mosaics of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors.  The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts/ Ibrahim Pasa Palace The museum collections start with early Islamic ceramics and continues with the artefacts dating to early Ottoman Period. Tiles, Korans, textiles and most amazing collection of Turkish Rugs decorate the showing cases and walls of the museum.  Naval Museum  The museum houses great collection of items related to the Naval History of Ottoman empire and young Turkish Republic.  YERABATAN CISTERN This immense cistern with 336 ancient columns was built by Justinian the Great in the 6th century and it was part of the one of the amazing water supply system in the ancient Constantinople. Military Museum Located in the modern city, the Military Museum houses an amazing collection of military objects related to Ottoman history and Modern Turkey. SADBERK HANIM MUSEUM Located at Sariyer, this private museum of Sadberk Hanim, the wife of famous Turkish industrialist, is one of the finest museums of the city for Anatolian Civilizations and Turkish Art. 

 

Atatürk Museum Located in Sisli, this beautiful three storied house was the home for Ataturk and his mother for a while. The Museum of Tanzimat Literature (The convent of Whirling Dervishes) Galata Mehlevihanesi, was first convent for Whirling Dervishes was established in 1491 by Iskender Pasa. Rahmi Koc Museum This fascinating museum which opened its doors to public in 1994 is one of the fine museums of city. Air Force Museum Located in the airport area, Air force Museum houses a great collection of war planes, cargo planes, helicopters, anti air craft artillery, missiles and radar items used in the Turkish Air Forces. The Museum of Calligraphy Museum of Calligraphy has an amazing collection of Korans, Tugras, Imperial orders and Seals, and apparatus for calligraphic writing, miniatures, holly relics and samples of book binding. Carpet Museum Located at the royal box of Sultanahmet mosque, Carpet museum houses a nice collection of historical Turkish carpets. Caricature Museum Caricature Museum which was first opened in 1975 at Tepebasi thanks to the efforts of the Caricaturist Association and Municipality of Istanbul. The Museum of Turkish Painting and Sculpture  The Museum of Turkish Painting and Sculpture was opened in 1937 following the orders Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the president of Turkish republic as first art museum of Turkey. The Fire Brigade Museum  The museum gives the cronogical history of fire fighting in Istanbul starting from beginning. visitors enjoy the water pumps of tulumbasi, the pioneers of the firemen in Turkey. Asiyan Museum  Located at Rumelihisar on Bophorus, Asiyan Museum houses the personnel belongings of famous Turkish poet Teyfik Fikret and the works f his contemporaries. This three storied building with 12 rooms was the house of Teyfik Fikret. City Museum The city museum which is located in the Yildiz Palace complex houses paintings of 19 century depicting the daily life in Istanbul, old calligraphy, textiles and 18 and 19 century porcelains made at the Imperial Workshops of Yildiz. Tile Museum Located in the Archaeological Museum Grounds, Tile Museum is situated in a fascinating 15th century Ottoman building. This beautiful building which is richly decorated with tiles was built by architect Atik Ali during the reign of Mehmet the Conquer in 1472. The Museum of Ancient OrientT his small but attractive museum houses artifacts from both Anatolia and neighboring civilizations. The museum features the artifacts prior to rise of Greek and Roman Civilizations. Museum of Reform Period Located at the Gulhane Park, Tanzimat museum houses documents, artifacts and medallions dating a specific period of Ottoman history when the ruling government tried to limit the sultans powers and institute the western reforms.

IMPERIAL MOSQUES IN ISTANBUL

Istanbul has great number of Imperial mosques decorating its skyline. While visiting this Imperial city which served as the capital for  Ottoman Empire, visitors are surprised by the beauty and variety of its mosques.  Istanbul expert recommends you some specific mosques because of their fine architecture or their interior decorations. THE BLUE MOSQUE Located in ancient Hippodrome and faced to Saint Sophia church, the Blue Mosque is one of the majestic monuments of Istanbul. Built by young and talented architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga during the reign of Sultan Ahmet I who wanted to fulfil the dream of his childhood. SULEYMANYE MOSQUE Suleymaniye Mosque which crowns the third hill of old city and adds great deal to unrivalled beauty of city's skyline. It was built by architect Sinan during the reign of Suleymn the Magnificent, the greatest of the Ottoman Sultans. RUSTEMPASA MOSQUE It was built by the reputed architect Sinan for the Grand Vizier Rustem Pasa, the son in law of Suleyman the Magnificent, ruling sultan of the period. YENI CAMI Located in the old Jewish Quarter of Istanbul, Yeni Cami was started by Sultan Mehmed VI who had certain difficulties during the construction. EYÜP CAMİ Eyup district took its name from Eyup el Ensari who was the companion of Prophet Muhammad and standard bearer of Arabic Army. Eyup was killed by an arrow during the siege of Contantinople.  MIHRIMAH MOSQUE Mihrimah Mosque, which is located on the 6th hill of old city, was built by great Ottoman architect Sinan for the daughter of Suleyman the Magnificent,ARAP CAMI Located in Karakoy district, Arab Camii is attributed to an Arabic general who besieged the city in he 8th century. Features of present day building is a church built during the Lain occupation of the city.NUSRETIYE MOSQUE Located in Tophane district, Nusretiye mosque marks the great difference in the Ottoman architecture. Instead of classical plan, we have Baroque style mosque with onion shaped weight towers and fine slender minarets.OTTOMAN PALACES Istanbul, the capital city of Ottoman Empire has great number of Ottoman Palaces in the old city and on the banks of Bosphorus.  The oldest Ottoman Palace in  Istanbul was near Grand Bazaar Area.  This was followed by Topkapi Palace, the great residence of Ottoman Sultans from 1460's to 1850s.  Starting from 19th century, Ottoman Sultans built beautiful marble palaces on Bosphorus Strait. Most important of those palaces was Dolmabahce Palace, built by Sultan Abdülmecit.  In addition to Dolmabahce, there are Cıragan, Beylerbeyi, Kucuksu palaces on the banks of Bosphorus.

Surrounded by the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and Golden Horn and located on the first hill of old city, Topkapi Palace, the great residence of Ottoman Dynasty, is one of the most notable museums of the world. This extensive and fascinating complex served as Imperial residence for the Ottoman Dynasty  for more than 4 centuries from 1462 up to 1853

Byzantine Churches and Monuments

Istanbul which was the capital city of East Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires has fascinating monuments of these great powers. Oldest monuments still standing in the middle of the old city is Valens Aqueducts, built in the 4th century as part of mighty water supply system of the city. Istanbul has three amazing structures of Justinian's time: the church of Saint Sergius and Bachus, built during the early years of his reign; the Saint Sophia Church, considered one of the architectural marvels of the word; the sunken cistern, a water reservoir with 336 columns. Although there are great number of Byzantine Churches in Istanbul, one of them, Chora Church attracts great number of visitors because of its magnificent mosaics and frescoes. One also shouldn't miss city walls dating to 5th century; Mosaic Museum where visitors enjoy the floor mosaics of Great Palace of Byzantine Emperors; the hippodrome where the chariot races of ancient times were held. Visitors stating longer in Istanbul are suggested to visit Fethiye Church and Greek Patriarcate, located on the banks of Golden Horn.

Marvels of Bosphorus

Bosphorus, former river valley of geological times, runs between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. This famous strait which is 22 miles long is considered one of the most important waterways of the world. Due to the change at the level of Mediterranean Sea in the geological times, former river valleys of Bosphorus and Dardanelles were covered by the water of Mediterranean Sea creating these straits. The Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, former lakes of geological times, became seas.
