During the Byzantine centuries, this location by the Golden horn was the market area for Geneoise and Venetian Goods. This L shaped market which has nearly 100 shop and 6 gates was built in the 17th century as part of the Yeni Camii complex. The rents coming from the shops of the market was used for the upkeep of the mosque. Since many of the goods were brought from Egypt with a special caravan called Misir Kervani, the Bazaar was named as Egyptian Market. In the course of years, it became as a special market place for spies, nuts, food stuf.
