This lovely building located on a small island close to Asian shore of Bosphorus is one of the landmarks of Istanbul skyline. Believed to have been built as early as 4 century, Kiz kulesi has been used as a light house and custom office building through all these centuries.
Many legends are attributed o this beautiful tower. We can mention at east two of these legends related to this tower. Due to these legends the tower is either called Leander's Tower or Maiden's Tower. |

This tower which has been subject to
stamps, coins and paintings and many works of art is nearly 180 meters far from
the Asian shores of Istanbul. Rebuilt during the time of emperor Manual Commenos,
the tower was used to tie the chain which blocked the Bosphorus strait for the
ships. Demolished during the Ottoman capture of Contantinople, Kis kulesi was
rebuilt as a light house which was also demolished due to am earthquake. Present
day tower was rebuilt by Ibrahim Pasa from Nevsehir in 1719. During the
Ottoman centuries, Kiz Kulesi was used as a prison for leading Ottoman figures
when they fell into disgrace.
