This impressive monumental tomb where Atatürk, the first President of Turkish Republic, is buried is one of the landmarks of Ankara. Built by two Turkish architects on artificial hill between 1944 and 1956, the Mausoleum of Ataturk houses the tomb of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk; the tomb of Ismet Inonu, second president of Turkish republic; official and private cars used by Ataturk; the cannon carriage which carried his body from Dolmabahce Palace to the ship and a small museum where visitors admire his personal belonging, his books and his clothes.

The Mausoleum starts with the ceremonial road, lined with double lions. At the beginning of the ceremonial road two square buildings that follow the shape of old Turkish tents houses plans and construction material of the mausoleum. Two statue groups showing different classes of Turkish nation welcome visitors. On the left side, three figures represent Turkish army, Turkish peasant and a student. Note right wing, three women who are depicted mourning show the sorrow of the Turkish women after the death of Atatürk. Visitors arrive to Ceremonial Square that is surrounded by tent shaped buildings housing the cars used by Atatürk. Flight of steps lead people to the great mausoleum of Atatürk. The carvings situated on the both sides of steps show Turkish people guided by Atatürk during the war of independence. Two great inscriptions located on the either sides of gates are the two famous speeches of Atatürk: his speech for the Turkish Nation and for the Turkish Youth. Visitors are surprised by the modesty of the interior of the mausoleum which has a very high ceiling only decorated by the kilim and carpet patterns of historical rugs and kilims. The saphophagus of Atatürk is situated at the northern end of the hall and lies in front of a great window, which overlooks Ankara.

The Museum houses interesting objects about Atatürk: photos of his childhood and his family, his identity cart, his death certificate, presents given by various world leaders, his medals. In the last section, we have the garments used by Atatürk.
