MILETOS

Miletos, one of the oldest and most important cities of Ionia, is now 10 km from the sea, as the Meander, known to Herodotus as "the worker", pushes the coastline into the sea at a rate of about 20 feet per year. Miletos was the largest city and the largest commercial center in the West Anatolia. It had four separate harbours. At the same time the city had a unique combination of money and intellect, expansive commercial spirit. The city affected the world in scientific and philosophical ways. Miletos was the home of Thales (625-545 BC), Anaximander (611-545 BC) and Anaximenes (585-525 BC), the pre-Socratic philosophers. It was thus the birthplace of Greek occidental philosophy, and natural science. In Miletos the human mind detached itself from myth and the world of the gods and sought measurable reality and causal links.

We can still enjoy glorious monuments of Miletos. Visitors are welcomed by a splendid Greco-Roman theatre. A short walk leads visitors to former Lion Harbour and outstanding monument of the ancient Miletos. Well preserved agoras, temples, baths, public buildings are proof for the economical power of the town. Faustina Baths and Local archeological Museum are well worth visiting.
