The Miniatures
The collection of Ottoman and Persian miniatures at the Topkapi Palace is
said to number more the 13000 pieces of which only a few are exhibited one time.
Oldest of these miniatures are collected in three albums known as Fatih albums
which were brought to Istanbul form Persian court during Sultan Selim's conquest
of these lands and are ascribed to a painter called Mohammed of the Black Pen
who depicted the scenes from the hinterland of the Central Asia. The oldest
Ottoman miniatures in the collection are by Matrakci Nasuh, Ottoman court
painter, who also made miniatures depicting the great campaigns f the Suleyman
the Magnificent, especially the Persian campaign which happened in 1534-35. This
fascinating collection includes the the works of Levni, the greatest of the
Ottoman court painter, who did the miniatures of Surname which was composed to
commemorate the great festival concerning the circumcision ceremony of Ahmet III
sons.
