The Museum of Ancient Orient
Visitors are encountered by two Hittite Lions from Zincirli dating to 9th century BC at the museum's entry.
This section of the museum has inscriptions, carvings, statues, seals, reconstructed gates belonging to Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Akkadian Civilizations. Anatolian Civilizations One of the most attractive pieces of the museum is terra cotta copy of famous Kades Peace treaty which was signed between the Hittites and Egyptians after the great war between these two super powers of the ancient times.
Egyptian Civilization Most of the artifacts of this section of the museum belongs to last line of pharaohs and were discovered in Thebes in Egypt. Mummies, burial objects, statues, jewellery and other objects form Egypt were donated by Grand Vizier Ethem Pasa, Ibrahim and Abbas Hilmi Pasas fro Egypt. Arabic Lands before Islamic Religion The statues and carvings of Gods worshipped by the pagan Arabs before the acceptance of the Muslim faith. These objects mainly made of sand stone and lie stone were collected by the Ottoman Governors of Arabic Peninsula and were sent to Istanbul. Cuneiform tablets The museum of ancient Orient has the second biggest cuneiform tablets collection in the world reaching the 75.000 tablets. These wonderful documents throw light to the different aspects of the Mesopotamian civilizations. Most of these tablets are social and economical documents giving information on ancient laws, literature (legends, epics, hymns, ancient proverbs, verdicts, marriage and divorce contracts and love letters. |
