NEW
ZEALAND MONUMENT
This impessive monument, designed
by New Zealand architect Hurst Seager was erected in 1920 for the memory of
New Zealand soldiers who died during the Gallipoi Peninsula. This impressive
single coloum which is easly seen from various point of Gallipoli area is
surounded by Manuka trees originating from New Zealand.
New Zealand Cemetery
Near to New Zealand Monument, at a
spot where Kemal Ataturk was hit by a shrapnel piece, a statue of Ataturk was
erected for the rememberance of the event. This colossal statue, depicting
Ataturk in his uniform, has a high pedestal with two inscriptions describing
the events related to Ataturk. Next to Ataturk's statue, there is tomb of
Nazif Cakmak, the brother of Feyzi Cakmak, the famous general of the Turkish
Army.
This monument has the names of 856
New Zealand soldiers and officers who took part in the August attack and
continued to fight in this area till November. Among the names, one can see
the famous figures of the campaign.
