Byzantine Churches and Monuments

Istanbul which was the capital city of East Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires has fascinating monuments of these great powers. Oldest monuments still standing in the middle of the old city is Valens Aqueducts, built in the 4th century as part of mighty water supply system of the city. Istanbul has three amazing structures of Justinian's time: the church of Saint Sergius and Bachus, built during the early years of his reign; the Saint Sophia Church, considered one of the architectural marvels of the word; the sunken cistern, a water reservoir with 336 columns. Although there are great number of Byzantine Churches in Istanbul, one of them, Chora Church attracts great number of visitors because of its magnificent mosaics and frescoes. One also shouldn't miss city walls dating to 5th century; Mosaic Museum where visitors enjoy the floor mosaics of Great Palace of Byzantine Emperors; the hippodrome where the chariot races of ancient times were held. Visitors stating longer in Istanbul are suggested to visit Fethiye Church and Greek Patriarcate, located on the banks of Golden Horn.
