HISTORY OF ISTANBUL

  • Paleolithic Period, earliest traces of this period can be seen in Yarimburgaz caves, located in the airport area.
  • 5000-3500 BC Chalcolithic Period: Pendik and Fikirtepe
  • 700 BC Earliest settlements at Kadikoy (Phoenician
  • 405 BC The city changes hands between Athenians and Spartans
  • 340 BC Phillips, the father of Alexander the Great lay siege to the city
  • 318 BC Antigonus, the general of Alexander the Great captures the city.
  • 74 BC Byzantium becomes part of the Roman Empire when King of Byhtinia Nicomedes IV leaves his kingdom to Romans.
  • 196 AD Emperor Septimus Severus demolishes the walls of Byzantion which supported his rivals. He eventually builds his own walls
  • 212 AD First recorded earthquake causes severe damage

  • 330 AD Constantine the Great makes the city the second capital of the Empire, changes its name to new Rome. Constantine becomes Christian at the end of his life
  • 364-378 Valens walls are built between 3rd and 4rd hills of the city
  • 379 Emperor Thedosius I becomes an emperor
  • 391 Christianity becomes the official religion of the Empire
  • 395 Emperor Thedosius dies and Roman Empire is divided in two.
  • 410 Rome is sacked by Goths
  • 412-422 Theodosius builds the land walls
  • 431 Council of Ephesus
  • 441-451 Huns, headed by Attila attacks Constantinople

  • 527-565 Golden Age of Byzantine Empire which stretches from Spain to Iran. A great number of monuments are built by Justinian who is named "Justinian the Builder"
