Paraclesion

The grave chapel, added in the 14th century, is decorated with fascinating frescoes. After the entry, the wall on the left hand side offers scenes showing the cycle of Jacob; Jacob wrestling with an angel, Jacob's ladder; the cycle of Moses, the scenes depicting the story of burning bush.

As to the right wall after the entry to Paraclesion, there are some old Testament scenes. Namely one can mention The attack of Assyrians to Jerusalem, the transfer of sacred relics to the temple of Solomon.

First cupola in the paraclesion is beautifully decorated with the figure of Mary who is surrounded by the angels.

Most impressive scene of the grave chapel is the detailed Last Judgment, The figure of Christ, flanked by Mary and Saint John the Baptist, is depicted in the middle of a blue colored Halo below which there is throne prepared for the second coming of Christ. The Apostles sit on the judgment seats. On the both sides of the throne, there are figures of Adam and Eve symbolizing the humankind. The fire of the hell start from the figure of Christ and ends up like a lake of a fire. Underneath the throne, there is scale and angels questioning the people and throwing the damned ones to the fire of the hell.

Towards the lower end of the right pendentive, there is figure of rich man who refused to give alms to the Lazarus the beggar. who is depicted as a child sitting at the bosom of Abraham on the other side of the scene. The scenes on the left wing show us the righteous ones advancing towards the paradise. They are led by Saint Peter who opens the gate of paradise where one can see the figure of Mary, surrounded by the angels.

As to the scene in the apse, one can see resurrection or the scene of Anastasis where Christ raises the Adam and Eve from their graves. Underneath his feet, there is figure of Satan, tied up by the angels of Christ. One can see al the broken doors of the hell and tools used for torturing. Old Testament Prophets and Saint are lined on the both side of the scene. Underneath the scene of resurrection, we have fathers off the Greek Orthodox faith.
