BERGAMA

When general Lysimachus came into control of Western Asia Minor after the Alexander the Great's death, he found himself in possession of a vast treasure mainly from the spoils of conquest, he deposited part of this money at Pergamon.

The Pergamon treasury which was kept on the acropolis hill was 9000 talents which was equal to £ 10.000.000 sterling at the present day.

Book collecting for the Pergamon Kings was a mania. Pergamon King Eumenes II and his successors collected manuscripts to fill their library on the acropolis of Pergamon. The result of this collective fever was enormous. Pergamon library which rivalled the Alexandrian library held 200.000 books and soon became a great rival for the library of Alexandria.

But Ptolemy, the king of Egypt, jealous of growing Pergamene collection prohibited the export of papyrus to Anatolia. The people of Pergamon invented Parchment and started using books made of Parchment which meant Pergamene paper.

Pergamon which became a great center of philosophy and art during the rule of Attalids was also home for great school of sculpture.
