PERGE

Like Aspendos, Perge was founded in the period of Greek immigration under the seers Kalchas and Mospos after the Trojan War. Historically Perge is first mentioned in reports of Alexander the GreatŐs campaigns. The city willingly opened its doors to him since it was unfortified. After this event, Perge was a Seleucid garrison, and enjoyed rights of minting its own coins and considerable freedom under the Pergamene kings. Like other Anatolian cities, Perge reached the peak of its fame in Roman Imperial times, during the first three centuries. Most of the surviving Roman buildings date from this period. The Roman theatre of Perge, which could accommodate 15.000 spectators, is one of the great monuments Antalya. As to stadium which has seating capacity for 12.000 people is one of the best preserved in Turkey. Perge welcomes visitors with its agoras, city gates, Roman baths and well preserved avenues. Perge was one of the first cities to be converted to Christianity,
