Eyup district took its name from Eyup el Ensari who was the companion of Prophet Muhammad and standard bearer of Arabic Army. Eyup was killed by an arrow during the siege of Contantinople. His tomb was miraculously re-discovered nearly 625 years later by Mehmet the Conqueror after the conquest of Istanbul. Soon, Mehmet built an impressive complex including a mosque and mausoleum for Eyup. Since many important people wanted to be interred in this area, Eyup cemetery became one of the greatest cemeteries in Istanbul, surpassed only by the Uskudar cemetery on the Asian part of Istanbul. Mausoleum of Eyup which is magnificently decorated with Iznik tiles is one of the most sacred shrines for the Muslim  people.

The mausoleum contains fine Iznik and Kutahya tiles and footprint of Prophet Muhammad in one of the show cases. The mosque, mausoleums, tombstones, wooden houses, complexes for the pious activities turn Eyup into an open air museum. Strolling through the cemetery which extents towards the nearby hill is unparallel experience in Istanbul.
