Turkish Economy

After the founding of Turkish Republic, Atatürk was responsible for great efforts to improve the Turkish economy. First of all, factories for textiles, steel were established by young Turkish government. Since this was after a depression period, businessperson did not have capital. That is why, everything was built by the state. So state owned sugar, textile, steel, glass factories. In the following years, this poorly run, state owned factories became a great burden for the country. Since they used very old technology or technology became old. Because of political corruption they were great number of workers (more that needed) everywhere. The reason for high rate of inflation is persistent budget deficits equal to 25 % of the budget. The reason for persistent budget deficit can be summarized as follows. State subsidies for state owned KITS economical plants subsidies for social security system insufficient taxation high rate of interest accumulated on previously borrowed dept, old technology and too much workers. Inflation has been 60/70 percent. It is going down with present government to 33 and down.
